“The sheer fact that there is a nationwide campaign to raise these important issues about artist pay shows how deep the problem lies. How did we let it become like this? In today‚Äôs society that measures everything in pounds and pence, what does this say about our attitude towards artists? As a young artist-run space and collective, we understand the importance of adopting DIY attitudes and creating mutually supportive communities. We do not see money as a primary concern but in order to sustain our work, we must make money. To find out that 71% of artists exhibiting in publicly funding galleries did not receive any fee was distressing and forced us to consider some important questions. Do we have a sustainable future? How many people have been put off from a career in the arts due to facts like this? Are we supported by these institutions or are we being used by them? What can be done? Promoting a spirit of collaboration and open discussion about artists’ pay is something that we wholeheartedly support. We must work together to foster change. Everyone is an artist but how many can afford to be? We’re glad you’re here.”
