a-n and AIR are proud to launch this landmark piece of guidance – a vital step in ensuring the sustainability of our arts ecology – on Wednesday 12 October at Jerwood Space.
Artist Jane Wilson is to speak at the launch of the Exhibition Payment Guide at Jerwood Space. Talking about why Paying Artists matters, Jane Wilson will draw on personal experience of working collaboratively with her sister Louise over the last 20 years. A Senior Tutor of Moving Image at the Royal College of Art and board member of DACS, Jane is committed to supporting fair pay for artists. Other speakers will include a-n Chair Jayne Knight, a-n Executive Director Jeanie Scott, Director Jerwood Charitable Foundation Shonagh Manson and Joseph Young (AIR Council).
Complementing the guidance, artist Dan Thompson has developed a manifesto-version for artist-led projects that takes into consideration the different economies that these often lo-fi activities operate in. Thompson will perform the Paying Artists Manifesto at the launch, while a number of artists simultaneously perform recitals across the UK including Margate, Glasgow and Leeds.
It has been two years since a-n/AIR launched the Paying Artists Campaign in response to the needs of its 20,000 members, to secure payment for artists who exhibit in publicly-funded galleries. In that time, it has consulted nearly 2,000 individuals – artists, curators, funders, arts producers, museums, galleries, local authorities and other public commissioners. There has been great support and willingness from all corners of the sector to help shape and see the guidance put into practice. This is a significant milestone on the journey to fair payment for artists.
Other nations have already tackled exhibition payment, but this is the first time a solution has been proposed and developed in this way – in collaboration not just with artists and curators, but also in consultation with Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council Wales and Visual Artists Ireland.
