Following two years of consultations for the Paying Artists Campaign, a-n will be launching the rigorously researched Exhibition Payment Guidance on Wednesday 12 October.

It’s been two years since we launched the Paying Artists Campaign in response to the needs of our 20,000 members to secure payment for artists who exhibit in publicly-funded galleries. In that time, we have consulted nearly 2,000 individuals – artists, curators, funders, arts producers, museums, galleries, local authorities and other public commissioners. There has been great support and willingness from all corners of the sector to help shape and see the guidance put into practice. This is a significant milestone on the journey to fair payment for artists.

Launching on Wednesday 12 October, the rigorously researched Exhibition Payment Guidance will help to embed best practice across the sector. The guidance outlines the core principles of exhibition payment for both artists and exhibiting organisations, with tailored information to support funders and the artist-led. It includes an exhibition payment framework to assist the negotiation process and aid transparency.

“Ensuring our artists are paid equitably for exhibiting is one fundamental step we can all take to make sure we preserve the freedom and diversity of our visual arts for future generations.”
Jeanie Scott, Executive Director, a-n
